Complete An Adoption Application
Once we receive your application, an APR team member will reach out within 5 days to qualified applicants to schedule a personalized meet and greet with the pets that best suit your home. You must be 21 years old to adopt. APR takes multiple applications to best match pets and families.
Meet & Greet
At the meet and greet, our adoption counselor will spend time with you and your family discussing your pet preferences and introduce you to the pet you applied for plus any others who could be a great fit. If you have another dog in the home, APR’s trained staff will help introduce the dogs to ensure they are compatible as well as offer tips on helping new pets settle into their new home.
Adoption Day
Once your adoption application is approved, we will coordinate with you to choose the perfect day to bring your new best friend home. This moment marks the start of a wonderful journey filled with love and companionship. We’re here to support you as you prepare to welcome your new furry family member.

Adoption counselors are available to assist with questions and concerns when your new pet goes home. If for any reason the adoption is not the right match, the pet is required to be returned to APR. Please provide advance notice so we can assist or make shelter arrangements.

What’s Included?
Each animal is examined by the shelter veterinarian, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, tested and treated for common illnesses and given flea and heartworm preventatives.

Blackberry
APR Team Member Jess Wilson fostered and adopted Blackberry in 2024/2025, a kitten who survived risky surgery. Now thriving, Blackberry’s journey highlights the impact of APR’s care. Having also adopted a feral dog and several other cats, Jess advocates for patience, believing that giving pets time to adjust creates strong bonds.

Catherine & Trapper (Coven & Leo)

River (Rio)

Yams
Kara Starzyk, shelter manager at Abandoned Pet Rescue, originally planned to foster Yams after his long 1.5-year stay. However, the feisty, social cat quickly bonded with her two dogs. Realizing he was the perfect fit, Kara officially adopted the big-personality kitty three years ago.

Linda Halverson
Since 2005, Linda and Hal Halverson have been giving a loving home to APR’s cats and dogs. This special couple has adopted 17 pets from APR plus their children Haley and Alex and many relatives have also become adopters making adoption a core value of their family.

Honey Boo
True love often begins with a spark! For Aryana Nascimento, she felt that special connection with a 14-year-old cat named Honey Boo when she first saw her on APR’s social media. Honey Boo’s health was declining after many years of being in a shelter, but since being adopted in February 2026, she is now happy and youthful!

April 2022, a special needs dog named Jude was adopted by truly compassionate humans:
Chesi and Addison Williams. Jude, born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, has lifelong balance and mobility issues. He spent two years growing up in a foster home and at the shelter until finding his perfect family!
