Dog & Cat Care Technicians are responsible for proper care of all cats & dogs upon intake, including feeding, watering, enrichment and the cleanliness of pets’ living spaces plus the overall shelter. Strong communication skills is a plus when interacting with adopters and volunteers.

Age Requirement: at least 17 years old for cat care and 19 years old for dog care.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Animal care background is desirable, but not required.
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and able to handle them when they are stressed or ill.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays. Schedule is flexible.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Will assist with all shelter chores including laundry, dishes and maintaining overall cleanliness of the shelter.
  • Able to lift and carry animals and food bags up to 40lbs, walk and stand for extended periods of time, frequently work in bent positions.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships and communicates well with other employees, volunteers and potential adopters.
  • Must be on time for shifts and provide advanced notice for time off.
  • Supports the mission of Abandoned Pet Rescue.

Job description:

Save lives by joining the team at Fort Lauderdale’s No-Kill Animal Shelter.

APR has an onsite veterinary clinic that oversees the daily medical care of shelter animals. Veterinary technicians and assistants prepare each animal for adoption by vaccinating, microchipping, treating common illnesses and assisting veterinarians with exams and surgeries. Being a small shelter, clinic staff also contributes to the daily care of the animals and operations of the shelter.

Key Responsibilities

  • A minimum of one-year of clinic experience is required.
  • Enjoys working with animals and able to handle them when they are stressed or ill.
  • Assist veterinarians during exams, procedures, and surgeries.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
  • Perform routine diagnostics and exams.
  • Prepares animals pre- and post-operatively.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships and communicates well with other employees, volunteers and adopters.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays. Schedule is flexible.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Will assist with all shelter chores and maintain overall cleanliness of the shelter.
  • Able to lift and carry animals and supplies up to 40lbs, walk and stand for extended periods of time and frequently work in bent positions.

About Us

Abandoned Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that rescues, shelters and finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs. APR provides comprehensive daily care for 35 dogs and 100 cats with our team of committed animal care technicians and volunteers. APR is a true no-kill animal shelter that has been devoted to animal welfare for 30 years.

  • Able to lift and carry animals and supplies up to 40lbs, walk and stand for extended periods of time and frequently work in bent positions.
