OUR HISTORY
Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) is one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in South Florida. Since our founding in 1996, we have provided comprehensive care and helped more than 10,000 pets find loving homes.
APR began as a small group of volunteers focused on trapping, spaying and neutering feral cats. Recognizing the need to help abandoned pets, we expanded into the full-service rescue we are today, housing up to 100 cats and 35 dogs.
FACILITIES & CARE
We have six free-roaming cat rooms with access to an outdoor catio, while our dogs enjoy individual, air-conditioned kennels and an outdoor play area. Our team of 25 employees care for the animals 365 days a year, and hundreds of volunteers help ensure the shelter’s safe and effective operation.

OUR IMPACT
On average, APR rescues 350 pets annually and facilitates about 330 adoptions plus 20 medical adoptions, which allows pets with special needs to be in a loving home while continuing to receive medical care from the shelter veterinarian.
VETERINARY CLINIC
APR has an on-site clinic with licensed veterinarians and trained technicians to provide medical care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering and other general surgeries for shelter animals. When animals arrive malnourished, abused, or unwell, APR staff work to rehabilitate and nurture them so they can be adopted. APR also assists volunteers who oversee community cat colonies by providing food and medical care.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
APR participates in more than 100 local events each year to promote pet adoption and advocate for animal welfare. Partnering with local businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations is key to helping shelter pets find homes.
LEADERSHIP
APR is guided by a dedicated six-member board of directors with expertise in accounting, law, civic leadership and business development. The Board plays a vital role in maintaining the shelter’s structure, financial stability and overall mission.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer roles are available in the shelter, at events and in support roles. Volunteers play a critical part in keeping APR running smoothly. APR strives to create an inclusive environment that fosters friendships and builds a community for all involved.
HELPING PEOPLE & PETS
To help keep pets with their families, APR often provides assistance with pet food and supplies. Every adopted pet receives a registered microchip to ensure the pet can be reunited to its family if lost. When families can no longer keep their pet because of life hardships, they find comfort in APR’s no-kill policy and commitment to find their pet a new responsible home.
