While most people were getting ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, Abandoned Pet Rescue was working to save a momma dog and her four newborn puppies that were abandoned at our shelter shortly after giving birth. A man showed up with a container of four puppies that he claimed he found. As soon as our team took the puppies inside, the mom was dumped from a car that sped away.
Two of the four puppies were injured with slices in their skin and passed quickly. One was born with a cleft palate, and thankfully an APR volunteer connected our organization with The Milk Drunk Foundation that specializes in neonatal puppies and kittens. The Milk Drunk Foundation took the two remaining puppies into their care to provide around-the-clock bottle feeding, but sadly just one puppy was strong enough to survive. She was named Tzatziki and she is still thriving a month later!
APR focused on caring for the 2-year-old momma bully who was named Betsy for Betsy Ross who sewed the first American flag. Once Betsy was no longer nursing, it was discovered that Betsy’s belly had been cut open to remove the babies hence why they had been sliced. She was most likely used for backyard breeding and the incision was not done by a professional veterinarian. Betsy had been through so much and the only thing that brought her comfort were stuffed animals that she adopted as her puppies. She gently carries her plush babies everywhere and sleeps with them tucked under her belly.
Betsy’s incision and broken heart continues to heal. Despite what cruel people have done to her, she still makes friends with everyone that comes to the shelter as she is our office greeter. She is about 50lbs of snuggles and she loves to give kisses plus she’s friendly with other dogs. Soon Betsy will be spayed and Abandoned Pet Rescue is currently taking adoption applications at AbandonedPetRescue.org. Her puppy Tzatziki has a potential adopter through the Milk Drunk Foundation.
