Cats are the most popular pet in the United States: There are an estimated 88 million pet cats and 74 million dogs.
I’d like to know who came up with this statistic and how they researched it.

Cats sleep 12 – 16 hours daily – about 70% of their lives.
I used to have a neighbor like that. The remaining 30% of his life was spent feeding his face, fighting with the neighbors, and (you guessed it) hanging around cat houses.

There are cats who have survived falls from over 32 stories and landed onto concrete.
This had to have been a very young, extremely physically fit cat. I can see the commercial now for Life Alert collars for elderly kitties: “Help. I’ve fallen off the 32nd floor balcony and can’t peel myself off the driveway!”

A group of cats is called a clowder. Look this one up in your Funk & Wagnal.
Should there be any mush-for-brains psychos out there reading this and licking their chops, let me clarify: The word is clowder, not chowder!

When cats grimace, they are usually “taste-scenting.” They have an extra organ that, with some breathing control, allows cats to taste-sense the air.
I think humans have a similar sense. I noticed a lot of folks grimacing when leaving the voting booths during this past election. It didn’t occur to me that it could be something in the air; I figured it was mass chemical contamination of the water supply.

Owning a cat can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by a third.
Personally, I think this occurs with ownership of any beloved pet. Every pet parent knows that it’s because, unlike kids, pets can’t talk back to you. Oh, what a blessing!

A cat’s purr is a form of self-healing, as it can be a sign of nervousness as well as contentment.
Well, gee whiz folks, give the kitties a break. They don’t have ready access to coffee, cigarettes or Prozac!
-
Adult cats only meow to communicate with humans.
Boy, am I glad! I’d feel terrible if my cats used the same expletives on me as they do on the lizards on the window sill!

The world’s richest cat is worth $13 million after his human passed away and left her fortune to him.
I want to know if this kitty was required to pay inheritance tax, and at what percent!

A cat has been mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska for 15 years. Meet Mayor Stubbs.
